Help your older struggling reader build reading fluency with four weeks of structured, parent-guided practice—while you know exactly what to do each day.

The Communications Fluency Pack was created for developing and struggling readers who still need supported reading practice, especially children who are ready for interesting, age-respectful material but need accessible text and a clear routine.

Rather than simply handing your child another passage and asking them to read, each lesson walks you through a consistent five-day routine. Your child returns to the same passage throughout the week with a different purpose each day, while you receive clear guidance for supporting the reading along the way.

A SIMPLE 5-DAY ROUTINE

Day 1 — Predict + Read
Preview the topic, listen to a parent read-aloud, complete a one-minute cold read, and set a goal.

Day 2 — Vocabulary
Reread for accuracy and smoothness while learning and using a meaningful word from the passage.

Day 3 — Reread + Expression
Return to the passage and practice reading with greater smoothness and expression.

Day 4 — Find the Evidence
Answer comprehension questions and return to the text to find evidence for each answer.

Day 5 — Final Read + Reflect
Complete a final timed read, notice growth, and reflect on what was learned.

FOUR AGE-RESPECTFUL HISTORY TOPICS

Your child will practice reading while learning about:
• The Pony Express
• The Telegraph
• The Telephone
• The First Transatlantic Signal

The historical subject matter is designed to give older developing readers something meaningful and interesting to read while keeping the reading practice accessible.

PARENT GUIDANCE IS BUILT IN

This is more than a collection of printable fluency passages.
The packet helps you know:
• what to do each day
• how to support your child during reading
• what to do when a word is difficult
• how much help to give
• how repeated reading supports fluency
• how to notice progress beyond words per minute
You do not need to create your own reading lesson or decide what to practice next. Open to the day's lesson and follow the routine.

READING SKILLS PRACTICED

The lessons support practice with:
• reading accuracy
• automatic word recognition
• fluency and smoothness
• expression and phrasing
• vocabulary
• reading comprehension
• finding text evidence
• confidence with reading
• supported repeated reading

READING LEVEL

The passages are intended for readers working near the beginning of Level 2 phonics instruction.

They include patterns such as short vowels, consonant blends, common digraphs, ng/nk words, simple silent-e words, some common vowel teams, high-frequency words, and necessary historical topic words.

This is fluency practice that works alongside phonics instruction rather than a complete phonics curriculum.

ESPECIALLY HELPFUL FOR

This resource may be a good fit for:
• older elementary students who still need reading support
• developing and struggling readers
• homeschool families looking for structured reading practice
• children with dyslexia or reading delays who benefit from supported repetition
• readers who can decode but still read slowly or effortfully
• parents who want clear guidance instead of having to plan reading practice themselves

WHAT'S INCLUDED

You will receive one printable PDF containing:

HOW TO USE

Print the packet and begin with Week 1, Day 1.
Plan on one short lesson each day. Your child works with the same passage over five days so that words and ideas become increasingly familiar while the purpose of the reading changes throughout the week.
Offer the support your child needs. The goal is meaningful, successful reading practice—not perfect performance.
