Help your older struggling reader build fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence with a parent-guided nonfiction reading lesson about the Pony Express.

This printable reading fluency lesson is designed for parents who want to support a child at home but are not sure exactly what to do each day. Instead of handing your child another random passage, this lesson walks you through a clear five-day routine that includes prediction, supported repeated reading, historical vocabulary, comprehension, text evidence, and final fluency practice.

Your child rereads the same Pony Express passage throughout the week. On timed reading days, you will record words read and missed words. On non-timed days, the focus shifts to accuracy, smoothness, expression, vocabulary, and understanding.

The historical topic is especially suited to older readers who need accessible reading practice without materials that feel childish. This lesson may be helpful for children with dyslexia, reading delays, or other fluency difficulties.

HOW IT WORKS

Day 1: Predict and Read

Your child looks at the title and picture and makes three predictions about what the passage may teach. After listening to the parent read the passage aloud, your child completes a one-minute cold read and sets a goal for Day 5.

Day 2: Vocabulary Builder

Your child rereads the passage with a focus on accurate, smooth reading. Then your child learns and practices the word “transfer,” including its meaning, part of speech, and use in a sentence.

Day 3: Check Your Predictions

Your child rereads the passage with expression. Then your child returns to the original predictions and decides which ideas matched what the passage actually taught.

Day 4: Find the Evidence

Your child reads the passage again and answers comprehension questions from memory. Then your child looks back at the passage and copies the sentence that supports each answer.

Day 5: Final Read and Reflect

Your child completes a final one-minute hot read, compares growth, and reflects on something learned about the Pony Express.

READING LEVEL

This passage is written for readers working near the beginning of Level 2 phonics instruction. It includes:

• Short vowels
• Consonant blends
• Digraphs such as sh, ch, th, wh, and ck
• ng and nk words
• Simple silent-e words
• Some common vowel teams
• High-frequency words
• Meaningful historical topic words

The passage is not part of a strict phonics sequence, so it is best used after your child has learned the patterns needed for the passage.

Parents may provide as much support as necessary. The goal is not perfect independent reading. The goal is successful, meaningful practice that builds fluency and confidence.

WHY PARENTS LIKE IT

This lesson gives you a clear structure so you are not left guessing what to do each day. The parent follow-along copy includes cumulative word counts, making timed reads easier to track.

The nonfiction Pony Express topic gives older children something interesting and age-respectful to read while the repeated routine provides the support they need.
