Help your developing or struggling reader build fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence while learning how Marconi tested a radio signal across the Atlantic Ocean.

This printable, parent-guided reading lesson gives you a clear five-day routine to follow together. It’s designed for parents who want to help a child with reading at home but aren’t always sure what to do during practice.

Use it for additional practice alongside school instruction or as part of your homeschool reading routine.

Your child practices the same age-respectful nonfiction passage throughout the week while you guide repeated reading, vocabulary, predictions, comprehension, text evidence, goal-setting, and reflection.

The goal is more than reading faster. Practice focuses on accuracy, smoothness, understanding, and confidence—with reminders to notice growth rather than expect perfection.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

You will receive a 9-page printable PDF containing:

• Cover page
• Parent Guide with the Day 1 lesson
• Words to Know
• Student Passage
• Parent Follow-Along Copy with cumulative word counts
• Day 2: Vocabulary Builder
• Day 3: Check Your Predictions
• Day 4: Find the Evidence
• Day 5: Final Read & Reflect

The parent follow-along copy helps you track reading during timed practice while your child reads from a separate student passage.

HOW THE FIVE-DAY ROUTINE WORKS

Day 1: Predict & Read
Preview the title, picture, and important topic words. Help your child make a prediction, then read the passage aloud while your child follows along. Your child completes a one-minute cold read, and you choose one small reading goal together.

Day 2: Vocabulary Builder
Explore the word receive with a child-friendly definition, part-of-speech support, a parent example, and space to write a sentence. Your child rereads the passage, and you select a few difficult words to practice.

Day 3: Check Your Predictions
Reread the passage and revisit the ideas predicted on Day 1. Check whether each idea appeared in the text, then identify what the passage actually taught.

Day 4: Find the Evidence
After rereading, your child answers three comprehension questions. First, encourage an answer from memory. Then help your child find and copy the sentence that supports the answer.

Day 5: Final Read & Reflect
Complete a one-minute cold read, briefly practice difficult words, and complete a hot read. Compare the Day 1 cold-read score with the Day 5 hot-read score, check the weekly goal, and reflect on something learned.

If your child finishes a timed passage before one minute, the packet includes guidance to record the finishing time instead.

ABOUT THE PASSAGE

In 1901, Marconi set out to receive a radio signal sent across the Atlantic Ocean without a wire connecting the two shores.

Your child reads about the challenges of lifting an antenna, how a kite helped hold it in the air, and the three soft clicks Marconi reported hearing—the Morse code signal for S.

This historical topic gives developing readers something interesting to learn about while practicing their reading skills.

READING LEVEL AND PARENT SUPPORT

This packet is designed as Level 2 reading practice for developing and struggling readers. “Level 2” describes the intended phonics practice; it is not a school grade level.

The passage includes short vowels, consonant blends, digraphs such as th and ck, ng words, simple silent-e words, and some high-frequency words.

Some historical topic words are intentionally beyond the phonics level. These are introduced on the Words to Know page.

Parents are instructed to read those words aloud, briefly explain their meanings, and supply the word during reading if needed. Your child does not need to decode every unfamiliar topic word independently to participate successfully.

AGE-RESPECTFUL READING PRACTICE

A child’s reading level does not tell you everything about their interests or thinking. Children who find reading difficult may still enjoy learning about history, inventions, science, and the wider world.

Transatlantic Signal offers supported practice with an interesting nonfiction topic, making it a useful option for older developing readers who need accessible material.

It may be a good fit for:

• Children who need additional reading practice at home
• Older developing or struggling readers
• Readers who benefit from adult support
• Children working on accuracy, smoothness, and fluency
• Dyslexic learners using supported practice alongside appropriate reading instruction
• School families and homeschool families wanting a clear daily routine

A CLEAR PLAN FOR PARENTS

You don’t have to turn a passage into a lesson on your own. This packet provides:

• Instructions for each day
• A parent read-aloud and follow-along routine
• Guidance for timed reading
• Vocabulary support
• Comprehension and text-evidence questions
• A small weekly goal
• A way to notice and celebrate growth

Print the packet, gather a pencil and timer, and follow the routine together.
